Thanks Steven.

I am looking at the username/password options.

Should it just pass on the authentication to the IIS SMTP service if I have
set it up in the mail client.

I get AUTH LOGIN and AUTH NTLM SMTP rule broken messages.

TIA

Nathan

Normally we use the rule that each ISP will relay for their own network,
thus if the user is connected to our network we will relay for them,
this is the same for all ISP's in South Africa each has a relay server
which will relay mail for their network.

The problem is always this means the user has to reconfigure the mail
client to send mail.

Win2k or Exchange offers authenticated SMTP relay (I believe sendmail
does too - not too sure about Domino), which means if the client
software supports it you could use a 2000 server to relay based on
username/password.

The last option is to make use of a web based mail client (This is good
because the user can access it from anywhere), be careful to investigate
what you are opening your system up to when you do this, insist on SSL
for one. Exchange comes with this or you can make use of freeware
Linux/UNIX based option or a commercial product.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

This is not really related to ISA Server but you guys are on the ball so
what can it hurt to ask.

We have the IIS 5 SMTP service installed on our ISA Server firewall. ( I
know Tom says don't but we have no choice.)

ISA is publishing our Domino Server's POP service plus the IIS SMTP
service.

The IIS SMTP service forwards all mail to our Domino Server running on
our AS/400.

This all works fine.

I am trying to understand mail relay and spamming etc. but can't quite
get it.

I need mail relay to send to the Domino Server but how can I deny
everyone else using our server for their own purposes.

Our users can be on the Internet from anywhere so they need to be able
to retrieve and send mail through our server.

Any help on how to setup or good information to read would really be
appreciated.

TIA

Nathan Simpson
