RE: Blocking Peer-to-peer file sharing application (kaZaa)

Seems to be the hard way to me as I didn't have to do anything to block it
and all the other stuff that isn't wanted, just allow what you need.

Hi Mark,

Typically, the ISA firewall in these environments have an "all open"
configuration outbound, and then they try to plug the dam with their
finger using deny rules. :-)

This is so odd, I always have to fight to try to use Kazaa (lite of
course)
not that I downloads anything though !!

What are the circumstances where people have to BLOCK it to stop the use
of
it.
I have always had to create a complex set of rules to allow it (when
required).

Not real important, but just curios.

Hi Edward,

Some day I'm going to research this problem, write up the answer, create
a PDF and sell it for a dollar :-)

The answer is to create a Site and Content Rule that blocks a required
connection. The research question is "what is the required connection?"
The Web Proxy logs will contain that answer.

Kenny,

My office actually tried blocking ports to stop Kazaa, but since
internet access is allowed it wound up going through 80. I am willing to
admit that I have less experience with ISA than many who post here, so
if you have a method of port blocking that is effective at killing Kazaa
I am willing to listen and learn. I can say that the method we used
worked, but I had not thought of renaming the exe and testing it.
Evidently, the user hadn't either. If I have some time this afternoon
I'm going to try that, if you're interested I can let you know the
result.
