SEP falls into the category of "host-based intrusion detection (HIDS)".
This is one category of things that fall into "additional firewalls" mentioned 
in the article I linked.

Have not opened an incident with SEP support, but had Microsoft in on it and 
they sent me a few KB articles about SEP not being able to be used on ISA 
(Symantec issue)
