Try cone (
http://www.courier-mta.org/cone/index.html). It is powerful, user
friendly (similar to pine, but much better/intuitive interface), and
standalone (does not depend on external agents like sendmail, fetchmail and
so on).
You might also want to try elmo (
http://elmo.sourceforge.net/). It provides
a more pretty UI - (on large console, though) and is equally easy to use (as
cone).
