I have the following packages in my debian based distro..
python--->version 2.3.5
python2.3--> version 2.3.5
python2.4-> version 2.4.3
you have both python 2.3 and 2.4 installed in your system. /usr/bin/
python is symlinked to python 2.3. (the third number is a minor
revision number
