Use tilda.
Using a dropin terminal is a great idea. I think that you can also do
this with any regular terminal like gnome-terminal by a suitable
keybinding using (say) xbindkeys.
Of course, if you want to use the "console mode" most of the the time
you may want to check out INX (INX is not X).
