[Ilugc] how to toggle between shell prompt and GUI desktop in Ubuntu?

I believe that the server edition of Ubuntu Does not come with Gnome/kde..
try sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

While installing I had chosen "Ubuntu Desktop" in software package 
option instead of  KDE/GNOME though it was one of the option to choose. 
Was it due to this?
please clarifiy this.
