I also had this same problem, mine is HP. But HP have one application in
Vista to save that separate partition in DVDs. I backed up that recovery

laptop.
Now I dumped Vista and Installed Ubuntu. Its going nice. But there is
another way to try Linux without disturbing your Internal Hard Disk.
In Browsing Centers, I use my pendrive to boot 'puppylinux'. These are
the steps I follow,
1. Connect pendrive with system.
2. Reboot,
3. Press 'DEL' or F2 or whatever key to go to bios.
4. Search for an option called 'Boot Priority'.
5. There I'll see my Pendrive Name('JetFlash')
6. Change Pendrive priority higher than the Internal Hard Disk.
7. Save and Exit BIOS.
Thats all Puppy will start to boot(Before that we need to install
'puppylinux' into our pendrive. Its so simple in puppy).
I don't know much about the bootloader used in External Hard Disks.
Puppylinux uses 'syslinux' to boot from pendrive.
