You can use LDAP with NFS shared home folders for the users.
But remember to take care of storage in your NFS server with
RAID(optional). Implement Quota for users.
Though the suggested method is a good solution, but not an simple one
to implement in college labs.
A regular 'SSH server' with user accounts and 'sshfs' on the clients
would be enough for easy remote mounting of user accounts and work
with. (i.e. no configuration required on the server, and all clients
should have 'fuse-sshfs' installed to access user accounts from any
client)
