I have not yet started preparing slides for the
presentation I promised. Apropos of that I want some
inputs from you guys as to what topics will interest
you.
Please remember that my idea is to help you students
and professionals either to get better jobs or to be
better programmers. So think from that angle and tell
me exactly what you want. No offlist replies will be
entertained!
Please get back to me at the earliest as I am running
out of time!
Details about the logistics are awaited. As of now the
plan is to have a full two day course on networking
and security. Day 1 will be networking. Day 2 will be
security and spam.
I am planning to screw up a weekend of yours! Hope
your girlfriend will understand! Ha ha! :-)
Here are the topics I have come up with for Day 1. I
am thinking of six hours of talking. This should be
sufficient to cover the following topics.
a)MAC and physical layer(802.3, 802.11, bridging,
repeaters and othe PHY concepts)
b)TCP/IP stack, header fields, TCP and IP internals
c)IP routing protocols, OSPF, BGP, RIP
d)App protocols like SMTP,IMAP,POP3,HTTP,FTP,rsync,
ssh
e)ppp,pppoe, pppoa, integration between telephone and
data networks
f)New age protocols, CARP, VRRP, MPLS, QoS concepts
like Intserv, Diffserv
g)VoIP concepts, mbone, Video on demand networks
h)peer to peer protocols, NAT , chat and presence
protocols like XMPP
i)VPNs and tunneling
I think you should start reading up Tanenbaum if you
have not already. Browse Cisco documents for
networking topics. I think IPJ has few good pointers.
Please please come prepared or else I will be wasting
your time.
I don't want to commit the date. Logistics will be
worked out later. I think you have a time of at least
three to four weeks. But start now and go to the
bookstore and start reading...
