Another thing - if that router is also the NAT gateway for your
office PCs, then see if you cant seperate your LAN gateway IP and
your mailserver IP .. you wont have junk traffic from your LAN [and
infected systems, older windows installs etc can generate a ton of
that], and this problem would be minimized even more.
The entire local network is behind the proxy-server shown in the diagram
(check
http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/pipermail/ilugc/2006-July/027566.html).
The proxy-server has a Squid running on it for HTTP traffic., and is the
NAT gateway for SMTP, POP3, NNTP, XMPP and IRC. No local traffic comes
beyond the proxy-server.
