VMPlayer has been free for use for many months now. VMPlayer
has the same virtualization technology as VMWare Server, but
the user interface is simplistic. VMPlayer also supported Intel
VT before VMWare Server, and is a 10 x smaller download (25MB).
Originally VMPlayer was intended to only run VMs created with
other VMWare products, but sites like www.easyvmx.com made
it possible to create VMs for free. I'm yet to out growVMPlayer
and switch to VMWare Server.
I have not tried Virtual PC and would appreciate any comments.
I would gladly recommend everyone to give virtualization a go.
Having a VM is handy when you want to test different OSes or
create "clean room" development or demo environments. I have
VMs for OpenSolaris, Debian, Win2k, Free/Open BSD on my
development box.
