Oops.. I forgot to mention that.. Emacs from X. And btw, if that
helps, I compile Emacs with --with-gtk (and with xim enabled, by
default)

I have seen this problem
with app not
properly written for indic support (like Firefox
without pango).
I don't have pango installed.
I don't know much about Firefox internals. But I was referring to the
similar problem faced in many Fx builds without pango (One such report
came to this group, for which the response was that builds with pango
work properly) Indeed I had the same issue with an optimized build got
from net which didnt have pango enabled, but the one shipped with
Debian (with pango enabled) had no problems.
