The information may or may not be relevant today. YMMV depending on
the subject matter. With respect to drivers, I suspect a *lot* has
changed since 2011, as you are now on a 4.4 kernel. This is one of the
gotchas of search engine results. Luckily this thread has dates.
I have a RAlink chip USB dongle working perfect on a RasPI (BCM2708
chip). I'm using the official distro Raspbian (Debian with a 4.4).
The driver performance is rock solid. I have been running it
continuously for 10 days now with no degradation in performance.
Originally, I tried openwrt but it's 3.x kernel does not have the
driver support for RALink.
I read somewhere that the driver "mt7601u" in Linux 4.x, supports all
the RAlink chip WiFi dongles. Anyway it is working for me, see my
setup details.
$ uname -a
Linux raspi-gw 4.4.13+ #894 Mon Jun 13 12:43:26 BST 2016 armv6l GNU/Linux
$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp.
