It should and I would definitely go this route before parting with
money for another device. You may have to build it from source to
avoid package manager dependency hell! Although, I am very surprised
the device works on an older kernel but not on 4.4. Can you try
another distro like Fedora or openSUSE with a 4.x kernel? The LiveCD
should do.
Please share your result / success. It would help others when they
search for the same problem.
(Regrettably most people do not post how they solved the problem
leaving the thread without a closure).
