I'm using GNOME 2.6, got the beast compiled couple of days ago..works
like a breeze!
My pc is a PIII w/ 128M RAM, and its performing well...
I would recommend you to try it.

Did you try debugging the problem by moving your .gconf, .gconfd,
.gnome* away?
Or just try creating a new user to see if it works. If it works, then
just delete files in .gnome, .gnome2 directory in your home directory.
The best thing would be, in my opinion, to use something lighter than
GNOME. GNOME is just too complex and fragile (atleast from the GNOME
1.4 I used to use). Sawfish is my always-recommended choice,
especially if you love customising things :)
