What is the purpose of the policy?
The purpose of this corporate IT policy is very straight forward : to provide
a set of guidelines fo all future procurement / out-sourcing / development of
software (henceforth app).
Well, strict guidelines. My current thinking (helped by a post in the BSD
list) is OSS will be default. If an open source app is not a available,
closed source apps wil be considered for OSS operting systems. If this not a
choice, then, and only then will a any other alternatives be looked into.
Right tool for the job.
1. If there is a task to be performed and there is a free software
equivalent to some commercial tool the management could keep the free
software in mind.
Like I said, it will eb the other way around, OSS is default :)
2. If there is a possibility of enhancing software will the
corporation offer support or offer to help?
Yes. The corporation has previously funded development of applications
(albiet closed source, under Linux) to serve its needs. If an opportunity is
seen for the general community to benefit, the corporation will try and
release any / all modifications it makes back to the community under a OSS
license (this includes BSD, right?) Most of the work we do is on the app
side, and very specific to our environment, but if anybody sees a use in it,
the corporation will release it back.
I think plain awareness about OSS and knowledge of its usefulness and
quality is valuable.
Uphill battle, but the LUGs have been a great help... we are slowly getting
there... (HELP! Need more help getting desktops snazzier :)
It really depends on what you want to do. Are you going to be selling
the software or is the software going to be used in house?
99.999% inhouse development. Heck, this place runs Ingres, COBOL, SCO, Irix,
Linux, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SAP-DB, and what-not... We need a Bismarck.
the software life and death for the corporation?
From this point on, yes.
Thanks for your insights.
We will find a way, or we will make one - Hannibal

Subject: [Ilugc] Kde in Woody
I had been using woody for some time. During that period I was
just using Gnome and Windowmaker. I would like to have kde
installed now. I used dselect to install kdebase,kdebase-libs etc.
When unpacking kdebase-libs I get the following error.
trying to overwrite /usr/lib/kde2/kio_help.la which is also in
returning error status 100 "
How do I solve this conflict? Thanx for your help in advance.
