If you wish to figure out if a key is dead, try using the
xev(1) program under Xwindow.
My experience working on keyboards all day usually wipes out the
keyboard letters and some keys lose their hysteresis (I hope this word
is correct), but keys don't go dead.
I know there is some difficult procedure to get the multimedia keys
working under linux even in case xev(1) does not report anything.
Even that is possible but never tried.
