As long as you see software as physical product, it will not be
possible to openup. If you start looking it as knowledge to be shared
then things change. We start thinking like the professions you
don't want to be compared to.
At the same time, as an aside, even if I videotape my mom cook
(what is it
with programmers and their moms? They seem to draw her out of the
way too often!!) and try the same dish the next day, I don't think
get it... But, then, even if SHE tried the same dish the next day,
mightn't be as good (only better?).
This is fundamental beauty of software. You can replicate it without
loss of originality any number of times and more importantly at
nearly zero cost. You can enhance it from where it is without
restarting from scratch. That's why do not consider/equate it with
physical products. Shift focus to service away from 'selling product'
