[Ilugc] Business value of Freesoftware

Hello,
Can anyone throw some light upon the bussiness model around the free
Softwares(not opensource) and how can an organisation gain by declaring
their Software as free software?Would that not lessen their sales?Enlighten
me on the Bussiness value for Free softwares?
From my personal / professional experience : I develop vertical applications,
I get paid a one time fee. As per my usual contract, I give the client the
source, /and/ release the software under the BSD license So am paid for my
work, and community gets to use the code...
There are other models for other types of apps (customisations of generic
applications, or other services based models).... but am not familiar with
those...
