Depends on how you look at it - it's certainly not open source, as Sun
is still resisting it - and the Java logo is copyright Sun. You'll get a
freindly but stern warning about using 'Java' in your product/project
literature if you don't take explicit permission from Sun Microsystems.
But, it's 'open platform' in every other sense of the word - you don't
have to pay any licence fees to Sun for using jdk, apache site is
choc-a-bloc with open-source java projects. In short, you can't make any
changes to the JDK, but you're free to do whatever else you want. Also,
now, you can influence what gets into java language by participating in
the 'Java Community Process'. All the future J2EE standards (like EJB
3.0) are being developed this way.
Just google around, you'll find a lot more info on Java's version of
being open :)
