It is compiled into everything, we use a small ELF section for this. Ingo would know more about this, but he is still on vacation for a while. At least we have some options. It is certainly possible to freeze a compatible version of the system libs in our repo, have them in bug-fix maintainance mode, and develop the current API (breaking binary and even source compatibility) in parallel. We always said that R2 will be a time when we cleanup, extend and break the API. But that doesn't mean Haiku R1 apps and BeOS R5 apps won't run on Haiku R2 anymore. We could still decide this to be the case, but it was never decided yet and at least I cannot see a pressing need for this to happen. So we should stop saying that R2 will in fact be incompatible, when that is not a fact at all at this time. :-)
