Vassilas, don't worry so much. Everyone's opinion may vary, but I seem to
have noticed an improvement with the BeOS world spirits. A lot of the side
projects are reaching maturity (VLC, BeZilla etc), YellowTab appears to have
a nice release on the horizon which should rejuvinate the community, and a
lot of people are coming back from Linux/*BSD, fed up with the anarchy that
comes with that system. OBOS progress is really good lately (have you
subscribed to the CVS daily digest?), and I think almost everyone would
agree that we've moved away from the doom and gloom which existed 6 months
ago. The BeOS world is stronger today than 6 months ago, and that's a good
sign.

Enjoy summer, enjoy the sun and green grass, the Greek islands (you're from
Greece, right?), read a book or two, take the women you love out for dinner
or somewhere romantic, enjoy life. OBOS will be running on your system
sooner than you may think. Relax.

Besides, when choosing hardware, buy something which you know is supported
on BeOS. I recently upgraded my whole box, and its BeOS compatible. OK, so
I cannot use the built in network card of my nForce2, but I've got a second
network card for that. And I cannot use my Canopus DV Raptor for Firewire
input, but heck, the nForce2 onboard Firewire works (OHCI). So the sound
driver for nForce2 has limited functionality, but hell, nVidia cannot get
their Windows drivers right still - the sound still crackles, EAX has weird
distortions, the Mixer doesn't work (they fix one problem, create another)
under Windows. The BeOS driver (thanks Marcus) is good enough for my daily
needs. To summarise, the driver situation isn't as bad as what you make it
sound like - 90% of systems work, you only may have trouble with exotic
stuff you rarely use (scanners, some special printing modes, etc). Day to
day use is sufficient, and for those rare times you need something exotic,
reboot. It wont kill you.

As I said previously, enjoy the summer guys (or winter for our brethen down
under the equator). Things in the BeOS world are getting visibly better
each day. And Vassilas, a fellow Greek and long time BeOS supporter that
runs OSNews now seems to have changed her attitude toward us - we now have
her support apparently (still a bit silent now but more vocal than before).
Say what you want about her, but she has made more people notice BeOS, Zeta
and OBOS than anyone else on the planet, and media exposure is a good thing.
If she has finally changed her spirits towards us, than I guess things are
looking good, aren't they?

I agree about the time, however the problem is that BeOS might not have a
community as large as it is today by then....
I myself are very involved with BeOS, and I am learning how to program on it
(since I would like to see some professional programs on it one day), BUT, I
have problems with finding hardware that BeOS will work on. I had to stop
for about a month when I bought my Athlon XP, until the first patch got
out.... Now that I want to have some more advanced hardware, to accelerate
my work, I can't because it is not supported. Wouldn't what I say accelerate
your work too? Instead of slowing down... And as for loosing two months... I
am not talking about all the resources, but only a couple of developers, to
bring some more choice. Because imagine having OpenBeOS ready in a year as
you say, but runs (well
enough)
only on a small portion of the hardware available.
Drivers will be needed on the R1 release any way. Why not accelerate that
part of the development and give better chance to BeOS?
