Small failure :-)

I'm working on a monthly backup of drupal and the database to Amazon
Glacier. It's like 0.08 a month
to upload, so I can eat that cost pretty easily. I didn't want to backup
the database anywhere personal
as it contains passwords and other sensitive info.

I'm not sure I can follow your reasoning here. Are you talking about
uploading an unencrypted backup to the cloud?

Amazon Glacier does AES-256 encryption on all uploaded data based on the auth
key.

FYI: there already is an encrypted backup archive done once per day (and
currently uploaded to my private backup server). If you'd like to do a second
backup to Amazon Glacier, I'd suggest to use that one.

Ah, didn't know about that. I saw a daily backup script but it seemed to just
dump the backups to /var. I guess you're picking those up remotely?

As for using the existing ones, that's definitely an option. At the moment i'm
just dumping the database to a .xz and creating a xz tarball of drupal once a
month.

Restores from glacier can be expensive per GB, so the less data the better. :-)

This is mostly the 'crap-hits-the-fan' once a month backup that should offer
100% availability if we need it.

All the current disk issues are making me a bit nervous.

We could talk to Hetzner and ask them to investigate what might cause those
ATA problems.

Yeah, between the ATA errors in the vm plus the smart errors on baron, I fear
a disk is definitely going south. Performance in vmweb is *horrible*.. writing
~200MB to disk takes 5-10 minutes + a bunch of ATA errors in syslog.
