It may just be me, but the menu gradient looks a little misplaced.
 
The Dark gray make the black text kind of hard to read, one good thing
about the mock-up was that the blue item selection made the white text also
stand out. Maybe invert the selected item text? 

The Gradient may also be a little much, the mock-up had only the slightest
gradient.  

Good direction though,
