I know that I am a bit late to the party on idea suggestions. What about a 
Donkey Kong theme with Super Mario Brothers? When I think of barrel rolling, it 
is hard not to think of Donkey Kong… I want to help where I can as this 
combines two of my favorite things: HackPGH and whiskey!

Barrel Roll Participation 2016


Year 3 at our Northside Barrelhouse and Whiskey Garden is just around the 
corner. Outdoor drinking, sunshine... here we come.

To kick things off, as is tradition, we've begun planning our opening week- 
which is where you come in. The 3rd Annual Barrel Roll is on Friday, April 29th 
at 5 PM, and spans the trip between our distillery and barrelhouse. We'll 
traverse across the river to land at the 2016 Opening Party and Smoked Bourbon 
release. 

We're seeking out the most creative partners and tasking them (you!) with with 
the construction of barrel-rolling contraptions. Think parade floats- but 
smaller and more rag-tag. They'll need to be able to carry a ~50 lb emply 
whiskey barrel alongside your organization's representatives. 

We'll travel over as a procession over the 16th St. bridge and Spring Garden 
foot bridge, making a couple stops on the way for snacks and beer: Smallman 
Galley, Pittsburgh Popcorn, and Penn Brewery. The barrel roll ends at the 
Opening Party, where contraptions will be voted on to determine the winner of a 
CASE of whiskey. 

If you'd like to participate, we'd love to have you. Everyone on your team will 
receive a shot of whiskey before the roll, snacks/beer along the way, and a 
cocktail at the party.

Strictly speaking this should be doable as a straight woodworking job.
A barrel is just a set of staves, two ends and a couple rings.  It can
be collapsed and reassembled relatively easily, as long as you're not
expecting it to be tight enough to hold whiskey*.

(Now *that* would be a fun stunt, and conceivably doable if you could
conceal a storage tank in the vehicle and buy that much whiskey.
You'd need a pump to fill the barrels fast enough, just use plastic
liners to keep the barrels from leaking.)

A bundle of traditional barrel staves wouldn't store compactly,
they're too three-dimensional.  I wonder if we could fake it by
kerf-cutting staves with the laser out of thin plywood, so when you
unroll them, they store flat, but you can roll them into a curved
barrel shape.
