Hi,

Yikes.  What's more, you will need a specific version of shell.dll. 
Therefore, just obtaining a copy from the web and installing it may create 
more problems than it solves.

If it occurs each time you try to install a program, then I suspect that 
either the Windows Installer or Windows itself has become damaged.  The fact 
that it lists other versions of shell.dll is quite normal on 2K and XP 
systems, and is a process known as side-by-side installation, which was 
implemented in an attempt to try to avoid DLL Hell.

I would try a repair on Windows, especially if you have any service packs 
installed.  If you don't have any service packs installed, it may be 
possible to install the original shell.dll from the Windows installation CD, 
providing you have a full Windows installation CD and not just a ghost image 
provided by an OEM vendor.
