Hi,

Yikes. What's more, you will need a specific version of shell.dll. Therefore, just obtaining a copy from the web and installing it may create more problems than it solves.

If it occurs each time you try to install a program, then I suspect that either the Windows Installer or Windows itself has become damaged. The fact that it lists other versions of shell.dll is quite normal on 2K and XP systems, and is a process known as side-by-side installation, which was implemented in an attempt to try to avoid DLL Hell.

I would try a repair on Windows, especially if you have any service packs installed. If you don't have any service packs installed, it may be possible to install the original shell.dll from the Windows installation CD, providing you have a full Windows installation CD and not just a ghost image provided by an OEM vendor.

Subject: [guispeak] how can I solve this problem?

Hi all,
I'm using a Dell inspiron 8100 laptop, 384 meg of ram, windows xp home, it's a 1 gig processor.
Here's what the problem is. When I install a program it tells me this error message cannot find the file shell.dll

Now, the problem is, how do I find this file and reinstall it? I do a search and it finds 17 shell.dll files, so, are any of those the file I need? Or, do I go and get it off the web and download and reinstall it? If I do get it off the web, where do I get it from, and where do I save it to? I know I'd save it to my hard drive, but where specifically on the hard drive do I save it to when it asks me where to save it in?
Anyone help me with those questions?
Harry
