Well, although I didn't have to walk to school in all weathers as I was away at boarding school, I know that my brothers and sisters all walked to school, no matter what the weather was like. I seem to recall we had chickens, and dad used to grow potatoes and tomatoes. I know we ate some, but what happened to the rest of them I don't know. Yes, we had a good roast meal on a Sunday with Mam's thick delicious gravy, followed by a rice pud which my dad was good at making. then we had a tea with sandwiches, cream crackers, biscuits and cake followed by fruit and jelly or fruit and condensed or evaporated milk, then through the week it was as you say, pot luck, although we used to have a meal from the chip shop on a Thursday. I think that was pay day. Do you remember a mobile van that came round selling fruit and vegetables, we had one that came round on a Friday and we stocked up with fruit from them. No, sweets and chocolate were a luxury to us in those days, but we didn't mind, as long as we had Mam's good wholesome cooking. I wonder what it would be like to go back to those days again?
