Yes, locking the screen would be a problem, but how often does that
actually happen - if you're using the phone to navigate, why would you
lock it? I don't have an iPhone, I have an iPod, so I am honestly
curious about this one.

For maps, you could download right on the phone I would imagine, which
seems like a good option to me - just download overnight while you are
on wifi and there you go. Alternatively, you could just connect to
google or some other service and use their data. This, of course, has
the advantage of being more up to date, but requires a connection
(though loss of a connection also means loss of gps positioning, if I
understand things right, so losing one nullifies the other anyway). I
don't know, but these are interesting things to think about.
