Hi:
The maps are loaded because when I set an address then put myself in GPS
mode, it works fine, but I can't just turn it on and go if I don't have
a certain location set in my GPS address.

Sarai,
Perhaps you are switching to virtual mode. If the maps are properly
loaded, your position will be announced without setting an address.
Press A to hear the address or C for city.
