It is truly amazing what the attitude regarding geocaching is in some
circles. Why a ranger at a park that has no physical caches would make
such statements is beyond me. But this is the reality that we face in
some places. You've got to remember there are public lands that are
sensitive and in no way should have any caches placed there. There are
parks out there were the rules say to stay on the trail to protect the
area but there are others where you can go wherever. The key to giving
geocaching a good name is to follow the cache placement rules. Never
place a cache in a sensitive place and always seek permission to place
the cache. We need to work with the various public agencies so that we
give geocaching a good name. This in turn will make these type of
negative statements meaningless, as they will be obviously false. So
far I've found most people quite intrigued of the idea of hit tech hide
and seek and I try to promote it as a family activity. Hopefully we
can overcome these misconceptions over time, after all this is a pretty
new activity.
