My Jeep Club looked into 501(c) status too. I was not directly involved,
but if I remember correctly, the accountant told them that unless they keep
a balance over $25,000 then it's not really necessary. There were some
other issues too, but I can't remember them right now.

of an apologetics group as well - our activities consist of a website and
limited book publishing, but liability insurance takes 80% of our operating
budget. And the group NEVER goes hiking in the wilderness or climbing rocks
or carrying snake sticks. In other words, if we had liability insurance, it
would cost a fortune.
