Dear G.A. Parents:

Greetings! I hope you and your family are doing well and staying healthy.
We have quite a few children out sick today, and I hope the "bug" isn't in
your home. The fourth grade has especially been hit today.

The last two weeks have been "wild" around GA! We had a great Catholic
Schools Week two weeks ago, and it was fun seeing the children have such a
good time. The Drama Club's "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Jerico"
was a great production, and it was fun watching all the pride our students
had in sharing their many talents with us. Thanks much to Miss Geanna
Hansell and the parents who assisted in the production of the play. Last
week was our first week of registration, and that is always a crazy time in
the office. All the forms returned have a different place to which to go,
and everything has to be checked at least 10 times. It makes life quite
interesing for our secretaries Arlene and Tammie. The Eighth Grade Talent
Show was held on Friday, and each one of the 8th graders were connected
with the show. The Class of 2002 did a great job, and they had fun doing
it. Thanks much to Miss Sharon Hanna and all the parents who assisted in
the production of the show.

This week we have registration for all new families to GA. It will be
interesting to see how many new Kindergarten students and first graders we
will get for next year. Will we need three or four first grade homerooms
for next year? I'll be glad when all the numbers are known and we can make
definite plans.

This week Lent begins on Wednesday. I would like to ask all the families
to please use this as a time to teach your children about the importance of
prayer, and of doing things for God and for others. The Golden Rule
Committee has chosen the theme of "forgiveness" for the month of March, and
each week will have a theme and a special prayer. We ask all parents to
please lead your family in saying that prayer each day of the week. (That
information will be sent with the March Newsletter.) Please discuss with
your children the importance of getting to know God, and the best way to do
this is through prayer. Let us all walk hand-in-hand with God during this
Lenten Season. I've asked the GA Staff to please use the following quote
from Max Lucado (one of my favorite Christian authors) as the basis of Lent
this year. Please take a look at it.

"We are God's idea. We are His. His face. His eyes. His hands. His
touch. We are Him.
Look deeply into the face of every human being on earth, and you will
see
His likeness.
Though some appear as distant relatives, they are not. God had no
cousins. Only children.

We are incredibly the body of Christ. And though we may not act like
the
Father, there is no
greater truth than this. We are His. Unalterably! He loves us.
Undyingly! Nothing can
separate us from the love of Christ." (See Romans 8:38-39)

To me, this is the way Mother Teresa would live, and if we always keep the
thought that we have Christ within us, we certainly would have very
mearningful lives. Those around us would truly know the love of God. When
I went to college at St. Gregory Seminary, there was a crucifix that meant
a lot to me. It had been burnt badly in a fire and the arms and hands were
burnt off. The cross was hung above a door and around it was painted the
words: "You are my arms and my hands." God has blessed us with each one
of our children, and it is our job to help them learn about God. Teaching
children in a simple way that they are the "arms and hands" of Jesus might
help them understand how to share God's love. I hope that this Lent is a
blessed one for you and your family, and that each in your family grows
closer to God during the next six weeks.

Have a very nice Mardi Gras tomorrow. There will be many Mardi
Gras/Valentine celebrations going on here tomorrow afternoon. Please feel
free to join the school community for Ash Wednesday Mass at 10:00 a.m. on
February 13, 2002. Have a very Happy Valentine's Day on Thursday, and enjoy
your three-day Presidents Day weekend!

God's blessings,

David Reker
