***This is a message from a member of Friends of Students for 60,000***

Carol and Fran, thanks very much for the translation. Sue, I'm including you
because I don't know if you are on the fsf60k@xxxxxxxxxxxxx group email
thing. You said you wanted to be in on the CE program, so here's the latest
from Mike and Conchita. Mike, Conchita and Emily, wow. based on these notes
you had a busy time getting so many people out to the meetings, getting to
so many places/schools, and gathering so much information. As Mike asked, I
do have a few questions/comments, and upon re-reading it again later, I'll
probably have more. Here are a few.

1. I really like the idea of having gardens. Whether they're biointensive or
not, getting kids involved in helping themselves is a very important thing.
In fact, its the essence of the project in my view. If the gardens are right
on the school property, they would have to be watched for pilferage and
animals eating up whatever grows. So fencing and security are issues. But
they could be hand watered and growing something all year round, not just
when there's rain. There's a huge amount of "Kid Power" that is unharnessed
in chacraseca and NA for that matter. Nica kids are strong because they lead
such a physical life. That strength could be used in these gardens where
they could learn a lot and also provide tomatoes, other vegetables, etc. If
North American kids, college students, and others can do whatever they do to
provide money and supplies, then kids' participation in these gardens should
be a requirement of some sort. I like the idea.

2. Some of the problems described in Mike's notes seem to be solveable, like
the problems of utensils. Someone here, maybe a member of Friends, could
take charge of some sort of appeal for such items and make sure they are
packed correctly and brought down by either Emerson, or another of Mike's
college groups who go down soon, or Students next Feb. Or funds could be
raised to buy some utensil/kitchen ware down there so no transport. Need
specifics on whether metal forks/spoons are better, or plastic, and how
many. also, Bill and I pledged some money when we learned from Chelsea that
the CE's weren't doing so great. Seems like acc. to Mike and Conchita things
are about 30% sustainable overall. Maybe Bill's and my money could be used
for utensils just to clear up that problem in a quick way.

3. I like the idea stated in the notes that "We make a deal..." Otherwise it
just the same old gimme, gimme, gimme program. The level of participation
has to be raised. Seems there's an obvious correlation between the schools
where parent/student participation is good and the strength of the program,
number of kids eating, etc. In those schools where partic. is low, kids eat
less, fewer times, etc. Maybe its time for some tough behavior. In the
beginning we were torn with the issue of having only the kids whose parents
participated eating. Some schools fed only the kids whose parents worked.
Teachers felt bad seeing some kids not eating so they got fed anyway. Maybe
if the parent doesn't work, the kid has to become a regular in the school's
garden in order to eat. Why should a kid eat if his parent doesn't work, and
neither does he? I know sports is different than eating, which is a basic
necessity, but here if a kid is on a team and misses practices, or doesn't
give 100% acc. to the coaches, he sits on the bench at game time. Kids have
to get into the act more here, where they can of course.

4. Maybe separate out all these needs and have each helping group assume
responsibility for one or more of them. For example,
- Bill and my donation could handle the problem of utensils
- Emerson or SUNY or M/D could take on a problem, like garden initiatives,
fencing, seed, tools, etc.
- Friends could assume a need
- Students could also.
- An individual/almuni (i.e. facebook reader) who wished to become involved
could do so individually or with a group of friends, especially if the cost
of a particular need was modest.

I've always felt that the CE Project is historic, that students here could
fund very poor people with the means of having them feed themselves. Getting
the non-participating parents to realize that, and show the world that poor
people, if given the means, can do it. That would be historic.

Thanks Mike, Emily and Conchita for all the info and work done here.

I'll re-read and send more feedback soon. Hope to see a lot of people at our
July 8 meeting. PW

Hello all-
As many of you know I spent the 17-27 in Chacraseca holding parent meetings
at 9 of the sectors 13 schools in regards to the comedor program. I was
joined at these meetings by Conchita, Emily Sendin of the Chacra-Miami
Project and a college Friend Anna Desousa. The following represents my notes
from each of the meetings.. I have several personal thoughts interspersed. I
want people to get this info read it and respond with questions.. In the
interest of time i am sending it out in this format. please give feedback
ask questions asap... The last four schools will be met with in the end of
July.

Maryknoll
The parents need to participate and collaborate monthly
If they are not cooking they Need to be paying a bit each month
Donate a bit of the food from your own harvest
2 mothers cook volunteer.. For a period to ensure there is food every day..
10 cordobas monthly per family (not per student)
Market Days last Tuesday the 22nd approx. 180 intact eggs arrived at the
school. (once a week at all schools we will have "market day" where each
child will bring in an egg or some sort of fruit or veggies to vary the
monotony of rice and beans)
110 families 250 students
Approx 80 familes present
Renting 3.5 manzanas 350 dollars in total
Land is far.. 350 is a sure thing...
This is a base problem.. The economic situation in the community makes it
difficult for this program to grow...
When this is info fact the only "solid" meal that people are eating daily it
makes the situation difficult..
Single mothers with all the responsibility of managing the family..
But on the other hand the people live in deplorable conditions but have
bikes tvs stereos...

San Ramon
This program is fantastic.. His children come home full.. At home there is
not much to eat.. In the morning coffee and bread sometimes only coffee...
(from a parent)
They need to be contributing money (perhaps 10 cords monthly) (this was
agreed upon)
There seems to be poor communication in this comedor..
We need more security in this comedor...
Only one mother is cooking cause parents do not show up.. She is
volunteering without pay...
But some parents are saying that if i was asked i would participate (cook)
The woman that cooks can not offer things like wood cooking oil etc so she
volunteers
The kitchen was robbed about 2 months ago and the utensils have not been
replaced...
They did not cook last week because there was no firewood..
5 cord a month would provide 3 months of wood (per family)
Put a garden at the school (perhaps JMU) could contribute the $$
14 parents and Andrea the teacher out of 22 parents 40 children
The school needs to be fenced in as well.
The parents have agreed to pay 10 cordobas monthly to cover the cost of wood
and additional alimentation...
firewood was purchased on Tuesday 6.22

Concepcion
45 families 85 students...
There is one day a month where they are eating well.. There is a woman that
comes daily to sell and she pays 100 cordobas with that money they buy
chicken for one day a month..
They want to grow a garden here at the school.. But the animals create a
problem...
There are not sufficient utensils and plates for everyone to eat at the same
time...
The 4-6 graders are going to participate in the garden program.. The fence
is the obstacle..
Parents are cooking or paying someone to replace them....
They are provided with the 50 pounds of sugar..
The school has plenty of fire wood...
24 parents present..
Up until two years ago they were planting.. One of the issues is only 8
families were participating in the planting and this caused issues which
led to the decision to rent instead of plant...
They will begin to plant at home and give a little fruit, veggies eggs etc.
This school seems to be organized better then most.. Participation is good
the program Is functioning as expected but with stronger parent
participation things will improve..

Mojon Sur II
This comedor needs utencils and various cooking implements can we buy a
parcel of land..
i think it is crucial that each school has land so there is a balance and
equitable distribution on the program.
28 parents present
100 kids 66 parents
2 mothers cook daily they bring things from the house to compliment the rice
and beans...
No tierra so this limits the ability to create funds.
A garden is in the works (we need maya miami-Dade funds?)
Parents will contribute 5 cords a month (plus one for gas and one for water)
Students for 60k will need to provide an armoire to ensure the stuff is
secured.. (50 dollars?)

Mojon sur i Jose Dolores 3
2 big tables two small tables etc etc... 3 manzanas they are thinking of
renting it as well because it is too far... (last year 1000 cord a mz.)The
comedor cannot be used for storage... The kids are eating daily but the food
is being cooked at home each kid brings a cup and glass every day... The
stove was destroyed... 100 percent of the parents are participating and the
children are eating daily... Parents 5 cords monthly sch
25 parents
80 children 51 families
The kitchen is damaged and the parents are cooking at home..
95% of the parents are cooking and the rotation is working well..
This comedor needs renovation.. (will get a proposal to fix this comedor)
ANNA PLEASE SEND PICTURES
The kitchen needs to be made bigger and better with proper ventilations..
They are renting the land for 1200 cords a manzana and using this fund for
purchasing food..
When a parent can not come someone is paid to cook the food..
The 50% that are here are the ones that are always at the meetings..
Some of the parents do not cook well (like they don't care)
We should paint this school
Needs latrines... Make a deal (90% participation we do the work in december)

Paraiso
70 students 45 parents 25 present
1 yuca manzana is being harvested 2240 was the profit..
1 wAs rented 2000 cordobas(last year)
2.5 manzanas yuca... .5 is unusable 2 rented 2000 cords each...
1000 cordobas to make the tumbola (but will it make profit?)
The parents seem to be working well on the land and the kitchen rotation..
They eat the rice and beans every day.. Gets boring.. One day a week buying
meat..
The parents are paying the preschool teacher (13 students 20 cords each)
plus the mined 500
This is taxing with a lack of work... Getting a monthly payment here might
be difficult..e
They have a garden (may Miami dade) squash and carrots.. (the evil eye is
affecting the harvest)
Ivan helps with fire wood and the parents bring some when there is a
shortage..
9 cows and Ivan is in charge of them... No milk at the moment..
The kids eat outside of the comedor which is why utensils disappear.. Hence
the kids bring plates etc from home every day.. (armoire would not solve
this)
New classroom being built as a preschool classroom and then the comedor will
be used in its proper purpose..
Parents will donate one egg a week kids will eat eggs (Wednesdays)
1 cord monthly for water..

Alberto barrios
40 parents present
183 elementary students 110 parents
Rotation of parents for grade... For cooking
ANF is not helping this school..
But they are actively seeking other ong for help (arco iris) but it is not
consistent
When a mother cannot make the cooking day they pay another woman 30 cordobas
to cook
8 cordobas a month cover water transport and alimentation..
Monday will be egg day..

Las brisas
45 students 26 parents
16 present
3 rented 1000 cordobas each one use the money for one day a week of other
foods and other supplies
3 will be planted.. Maiz melon will be planted... Will sell part and eat
part..
1 6 liters of milk daily...
They have a rotation every 15 days each mother cooks (2 people)
In the case the mom cannot come a sub is paid 20 cords...
They are donating veggies to augment the comedor..
They are growing beans as well.. Fruits and other stuffs are being donated..
There is a garden but it is not closed with a fence..
New comedor is secure..
Sold a macho to get a female = milk..
More cows..= milk..
Milk is more consistent then crop growing.. It's a sure thing
10 cords a month..
(return in October)

Miramar
37 padres
175 students 67 parents total...
1400 is the rent for the 2 manzanas..
1.5 manzanas being planted about 90% participation the other parents are
helping in other ways...
Mothers are cooking in cases where mothers cannot show they are paying 30
cords for a r placement..
The techo is bad the puerta is bad
There is a lock box to store supplies...
No cups etc..
Parents provide the fire wood...
4 cords being paid for transport and food.. Will increase to 10 cords
monthly beginning in July
Need to secure things with an armoire to keep out the cockroaches..
They have a garden with ayote pepian.. (just starting)
Need latrines.. 1 is functioning (kind of) and one inodoro..
(return to this one in October)

No spacing, no caps, and incorrect spellings make harsh work for the
translators!

Hello to all - hope this helps. Thank you for doing most of the work,
Carol!

Fran

Hello dear friends,I am pleased to share the achievements in the
various meetings in which we participated in the different schools and
school
canteens, with parents specifically, where we could learn about all
achievements
and difficulties that exist in each comedor.
We visited nine schools and 4 more are pending in the next months. We were
able to
observe that 30% of the kitchens are self-sustaining, because the factors
are many:
1) The harvests are not profitable, there have been a short time ago(?) many
rains
which place the crops at risk, and it is for this reason that the directors
(? â?? las directivas â??
directing boards?) have taken the attitude to rent the land to be free from
such risks,
because it is more secure/sure to rent the land. Regarding the said lands,
the value
by manzana ranges from 700, 1000, to 2000 cordobas according to soil
quality.
> visitamos 9 escuelas y pendiente
manzana
segun la calidad de tierra.
Up to now, there is no other group which is contributing funds for the
comedors,
only the contributions of the students of SF60K and the parents who WILL
begin
(â??empezaranâ??) to make monthly contributions of 510 cordobas. (Or does
she mean 5 â?? 10
and forgot the hyphen?) In order to reinforce the improvements in the daily
diet
since America Nicaragua (??) only helps with beans, soup, rice, and what the
students
bring, the Comedor Escolar commission buys the complement. As for the
parents, they
are contributing their time in preparing food once a month or every two
months, and
at the same time we are bringing them the message of how to improve the
program with
foods that they grow in their homes be they fruits, eggs, greens, even
training them
to sow and grow plants on their patios, and bring them to the schools.
Also in some
schools already they have begun to form school gardens
to grow the vegetables that are used in daily cooking.
(see the chart â?? categories are below)
diario

I am currently sending the first part of the schools already visited where
we were
able to update this information for your information where 4 schools have in
their
(power?) cattle equivalent to 20 animals and they are consuming milk daily
as a
complement, Also we found that there are 2 comedors with bad structures
that
have to be repaired, also it was found that 3 schools do not have land for
the
comedor. The schools to visit will be the following: BOCA DE CANTAROEL
RECREO,
MAJADA
EN EL MES DE JULIO.
In this way the information has been updated to better inform
you so that it took place with the participation of the central
committee of the comedors and representatives of SF60K. OK.
Until soon, my friends. >
60,000>> ok.

The one thing I noticed when I was in Nic was the indoor pollutio= n. It is
a serious cuase of health problems in Central America and easily f= ixed. I
think that a concerted effort to provide homes with simple ventilat= ion to
rid the homes of smoke would be a worthwhile and economical project.= A
