Could you let the VL developers know the problems you uncover re
localization and what you are doing to resolve them?

There is a how-to link in the forums re localization. You could add your 2
cents there.

Or, there is the general dev forum.

I opened the warehouse at 5:45PM

Volunteers attending: Adrian, Dan, Mike

Testing results on the two systems for Carol:

HP Computer: Was unable to get sound to work. Ran out of time to work on it
as we were also working on the Spanish language setups.

Gateway Computer: Changed cdrom drive twice will still not open reliably, or
in some cases at all. Otherwise the system seems to be OK.

Spanish language localization: Adrian and I logged in using Spanish-Mexican.
Most things seemed to be OK, however, it does not appear that the Vector
Linux people did anything to localize any of the bash scripts like VASM. In
addition some of the programs also do not appear to support the language env
variables. Adrian translated the menu for VASM and I modified the script so
it would work from the desktop and put it on the HP systems root desktop if
you run it is will show a Spanish root menu. The changes are hardcoded into
the script so I didn't want to mess with the VASM script in /sbin. I will
look for a better solution the the bash script problem. The quick and dirty
solution would be to code a conditional statement into the bash scripts to
switch to Spanish if the LANG env variable is set to Spanish and remain in
English otherwise. The ideal solution would be to recode all the user
interactive scripts to use GNU gettext to support full localization. I have
installed VL 6.0 on a test system at home and will work on the scripts over
the coming weekend where I have Internet access. I will probably take the
quick and dirty approach for now unless gettext looks like it will work
easier.

Dan worked hard on installing Vector 6.0 on several systems, but cdrom and
hard drive problems prevented him from completing any of the systems.

Adrian had to leave at 8:00. Dan and I stayed until 8:30 modifying the VASM
script and sorting out problems. I also assisted Dan with installing Puppy
Linux on his laptop.

Thank you to all who attended!

Mike
