Start machine and when you see it doing a memory test press STOP and the letter A. This will bring you into a Prom Prompt and then just insert your CDROM and type "boot cdrom" and press ENTER without the ""'s. It'll boot of CDROM and then ask for a login which is root and enter. Then you can type format and enter when you get the prompt and it'll bring up another menu. This menu there will be a labeling pick and a verify, partition, etc. Here is my printout of a 8.4 GB HardDrive 0 root wm 0-152 75.30 MB 1 swap wu 153-437 140.22 MB 2 backup wm 0-16390 8.87 GB 6 usr wm 438-2347 940.08 MB 7 unassigned wm 2348-15947 6.54 GB I don't have the label info but make sure it's the same as the old one you have. IT'll be 6 Characters I think Like "SUN8.4" or something like that. =20 -----Original Message----- From: foxboro-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:foxboro-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Rarden, Tim Sent: Friday, May 25, 2007 10:12 AM To: foxboro@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [foxboro] WP51D with hard drive problems Thanks Dale, Questions: How do I redirect to boot from CDRom? Here is a link of what I did for the B Box. //www.freelists.org/archives/foxboro/04-2004/msg00004.html However there are some differences in the D Box but very similar. You'll figure it out. You will have to check the old Hard Drive for label info and partition info and make your new 10 GB Drive the same using the format tools booted up from your cdrom Day 0. Be sure to label the disk at the end of your partitioning exercise. This should work for you because now the system will think you have a 8.4 GB instead of a 10 GB HD and install should go flawlessly. You don't need the floppy disk if you are installing a version later than 6.1 Dale Gillis Instrument Technician Stora Enso Port Hawkesbury Ltd. Have done some searching but have not found an answer to my problem. =3D3D20 Have a WP51D Sun box that constantly cycles through boot sequence when attempting to boot. Gives some error associated with reading from the hard disk. I attempted to do an "ia_install" from the "Day 0" cd but when it gets to step where it is supposed to format the hard drive it says "unable to format hard disk" and dumps out to "#" prompt. I have a few questions: =3D3D20 1. The hard drive installed is a Seagate 8.4GB IDE drive. I have a known good Fujitsu 10GB IDE drive. I have attempted to install the Fuji drive but the "auto_get_size" script in the ia_install fails and dumps me out to the # prompt. Can I install this drive? 2. How do I format a drive of any size in a WP51D box? A better question is how do I boot to Unix so that I can format a drive on the WP51D box? There is no floppy and I can't find a way to get to bios to boot from CDRom. 3. Do I have to get a replacement from Foxboro (Seagate 8.4GB drive) with some magic performed on it by Foxboro or, can I purchase a refurb'd drive and install it? =3D3D20 Thanks for your help in advance! =3D3D20 Best Regards, =3D3D20 Tim Rarden Process Control Engineer SMART PAPERS HOLDINGS LLC "You're Brilliant.
