While I can't comment directly on the Server version of
AW70, (haven't got my hands on one yet), use of the AW as
an operator workstation is quite common and usually
acceptable.

The usual cautions exist in two areas: First is the old
problem of a mixed use station as engineers and operators
compete for the same keyboard, mouse and screen. Second
is that the AW is more likely to run other applications
(historian, data crunching, reporting, etc.) and if these
jobs take enough time, it could impact the speed of
responce to operator actions.

The second is not often a problem anymore, with faster
processors, etc.

This mixed use is common on 50 and 70 series, on nodebus
and ethernet.

Purchase an additional display manager and install it on the AW. Purchase
Exceed or GoGlobal and install it on a PC. Make sure the AW's 2nd Ethernet
port is configured and connected to the same LAN as the PC with Exceed. Do
your configuration from the PC.

Does anyone else allow their AW to be used as an operator workstation? We
are considering doing so. Are there some very good reasons why we should
not allow an operator to use the AW as a workstation?

Subject: [foxboro] Server 70 client as Configuration Station

Hello all,

Up to now all the configuration work on our I/A NT-system is done on a
AW70.
For Operator Control, there is one WP70 (with dual screen) available.
When no configuration is in progress (at this moment this is a lot off the
time), the AW70 is also available for the operators.
Due to adding more and more process part to this I/A system, the AW70
becomes less time available for the operators, which is becoming a problem.
We could add a second WP70 to our nodebus, for operator use and claim the
AW70 as a almost full-time Configuration Station.
To save some money, the alternative idea is upgrading the AW70 towards AW70
C, and use a client as Configuration Station. In this proposition, the
AW70C server remains aivailable for the operators.

Are there any experiences with this kind of solution ?
