A gateway firewall plays a different security role compared to a host level firewall. Like I mention earlier, an infected PC is going to start "looking up" other PCs on the LAN. Unless you got some IDS running, the HOST level firewall is going to be final like of defense in protecting you. Windows Firewall from SP2 is never going to allow an in coming process if was never initiated by the recipient. /Sarbjit Gill _____ From: John Tolmachoff (Lists) [mailto:johnlist@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2005 9:11 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Outlook refresh problem - Solved http://www.MSExchange.org/ OK, let me back up. For most clients, I recommend set the XP firewall to disabled by GPO. The reason is the benefit with a corporate network of the firewall is less than the issues that can be cause by it being on. However, I have 2 clients that to date have refused to use a firewall at the gateway, and so for them I recommend that the XP firewall be left on. Or, I partially agree. The firewall can and does interfere with some applications - and you want to understand and fully test your company's business applications to determine what - if any - tweaking is required to enable those applications in your environment. But saying you should disable the firewall? I disagree. Defense in depth is a well documented approach, and one more layer is a good thing. is the firewall in WinXP perfect? Far from it (what is?). But having it enabled is a good thing. It's just important to understand what requirements you have and address them appropriately. _____ From: John Tolmachoff (Lists) [mailto:johnlist@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Fri 2/18/2005 4:31 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Outlook refresh problem - Solved http://www.MSExchange.org/ If you are using Windows XP Professional in a corporate environment, you should have the firewall disabled as that will interfere with a lot of domain things.
