Perimeter firewalls and application firewalls such as SP-2 f/w are totally
different in their purpose. I think in real corporate environment, one must
have application firewalls protecting each PC in conjunction with perimeter
firewalls. And I really cannot believe in today's world, there is someone who
doesn't want a perimeter firewall. Well good luck for them.

OK, let me back up. For most clients, I recommend set the XP firewall to
disabled by GPO. The reason is the benefit with a corporate network of the
firewall is less than the issues that can be cause by it being on. However, I
have 2 clients that to date have refused to use a firewall at the gateway, and
so for them I recommend that the XP firewall be left on.

I don't think I'd agree with that statement. Or, I partially agree.
The firewall can and does interfere with some applications - and you want to
understand and fully test your company's business applications to determine
what - if any - tweaking is required to enable those applications in your
environment.
But saying you should disable the firewall? I disagree. Defense in depth is a
well documented approach, and one more layer is a good thing. is the firewall
in WinXP perfect? Far from it (what is?). But having it enabled is a good
thing. It's just important to understand what requirements you have and
address them appropriately.

If you are using Windows XP Professional in a corporate environment, you
should have the firewall disabled as that will interfere with a lot of
domain things.
