I do let my kids read books from their Hebrew book list ...and Harry
Potter...and many of them come and tell they appreciate the original in English
better than the translation. I can usually tell, through misspelled names, if
the pupil has read the Hebrew version only! An appropriate book task might be,
in the case that they've read one of these titles, to compare the two and
analyze a paragraph or two, relating to the translation. A similar task could
be done regarding those who have seen the movie as well as having read the
book.
Another idea I picked up on ETNI a while ago and use is to have the kids, in
advance, choose and copy 2 quotations from the text . On book report day I
chose 1. I then ask them to relate to that quotation in their class- written
book report....explaining who said it to whom (if it was part of a dialogue)
and its importance/significance/relevance to the plot. In addition, they have
to write a short summary of the plot and write up their recommendation (or
not!). (Sorry I don't remember who suggested this! But thanks!)
The bottom line is that some pupils will always find a way to get through this
without having the book and I don't think we can do much about it!
