This afternoon, there were 4 Lapland Longspurs, 3 American Pipits, and at least 3 Fox Sparrows near the parking lot for Max Patch. As you take the right-hand trail from the parking lot, the pipits would be the first birds you might encounter in the dense, grassy area to your left (looking towards the peak). The Lappies were originally on the edge of the dense grass, but I flushed them farther away down the trail and to your left, into the habitat that has very sparse, shorter grasses mixed in with a few shrubs. This habitat continues in a band around the base of the bald. The Fox Sparrows were in the first dense blackberry/shrub patch that you encounter on the right side of the trail, which is also about where the dense grassy vs. shrubby grassy habitat changes on your left. Not much else in the wooded areas up there. Steve Ritt Asheville, NC / San Diego, CA
