ta da! I found it. And you are lucky because I have two copies of 1976 GMC truck service manual supplement, one of which you can have Saul! Just let me know.
Right there on page 1 it lists the assembly plants: Z = Freemont D = Doraville R = Arlington B = BaltimoreNot sure what state Freemont is in (CA?) but there was a GM plant there in the mid 70s.

My seventh digit is a 'Z' ??? Also, apparently my Sprint is a "Classic" The dash looks the same as my '73. Big boxy speedometer, and a separate rectangular area to the left with a fuel gauge and 3 idiot lights. No fuel economy gauge, although I did see in the owner's manual where that was an option.------------------------------------------------------------------------ *From:* Mary McCarthy <printces@xxxxxxxxxxxx> *To:* elky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx *Sent:* Tue, July 12, 2011 5:17:03 PM *Subject:* [elky] 76 sprint VIN 1st symbol "5" indicates GMC 2nd and 3rd symbols = series C = sprint D = Classic 3rd and 4th indicate body type: 80 = 2 dr sedan pickup 5th indicates engine D = 250 6cyl L = 350 V8 (4 bbl) Q = 305 V8 U = 400 V8 (4 bbl) V = 350 V8 (2bbl) 6th symbol = year should be a 6 7th is assembly plantg D = Doraville GA R= Arlington TX l = Oshawa Canadathe last 6 symbols are the sequential unit production number for each plant.and another question - which dash panel did you get - the one with the huge Fuel Economy gauge and the idiot lights or the sporty one with real gauges in smaller holes?Mary Rules: Please play nicely with others. -List members page (text & pic links): http://www.myelcamino.net/eclist.htm -List members page (all pics): http://www.myelcamino.net/ec_list.htm
