You should be able to use MS-Word.  In Explorer, save the file as a "Web Page,
complete".  In Word, opend the file, then save it as a Word document.

I think what you want is an HTML stripper!

Unlike Gipsy Roselee it is a programme which removes the HTML tags from a text
file.

Just off hand I can't give you a programme name but I am sure a google search
will turn up several free options.

Otherwise, you certainly can remove them manually. Seems to me that anyone
with the patience to knit might not find that as daunting a task as some
others.
