I approached this a slightly different way, and I *think* I can see Peter's logic here. In the Search & Replace dialog, I first checked the "Replace stylename" box, and then entered "para." (No quotes) in the "Text to find:" field. I left the "Replace with:" blank. A warning said 'There is no style defined with the name "". Are you sure you wish to replace all occurrences of the style "para." with ""?' I clicked OK, and it did replace all instances of both beginning and ending para. Styles. I turned on coded view and hit (f6). I hit shift-control-, and got the <> pair. I typed in para. and tabbed to replace stylenames and check the box. I clicked ok. It said "There is no style named "es~para. are you sure you want me to replace es~para. with" if I say yes anyway it of course doesn't find the text in the document.
