No, it doesn't work, at least not with the latest stable version of DokuWiki.
All the CVS directories are still shown in the list of pages in the index (
doku.php?do=index ) as well as in the list of namespaces in the window where
you can paste an image and links to other media files in the editor window.
It correctly excludes pages (not namespaces) from the index, but it also does
not hide files from the mediafile selection.
I wanted to hide all CVS directories from DokuWiki altogether (pages
namespaces and media namespaces). Matching the regexp directly inside the
search function achieves exactly this.
