Let's have some more facts ;-) Why does it work as it does? DokuWiki's syntax 
was designed to be as unobstrusive an intuitive as possible. So I tried to make 
linking easy. Eg. if you want to link to a website its enough to write 
www.google.com instead of using [[http://www.google.com]], if you mention an 
email like <andi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> it automatically gets linked, too. So I 
implemented the same mechanism for server shares. When I write about a server 
share I think it is most intuitive for my workgroup members to get a link to 
click on. If I don't want a link I still can write %%\\server\foo%%.

But of course this behaviour is discussable and we should agree on a default. 
Autolink windows shares or not?
