Hi all. Well, after contacting Apple tech support, it seems that the firewire chip cannot be replaced. Not only would that void the warranty, but, it supposedly can't be done because the chip is on the motherboard directly. Also, interestingly enough, the two people I spoke to at applehad no idea that the Agere chip caused so many issues with A V gear. I find that hard to believe as there is a large number of forum/blog entries aboutthis very thing, even on apple's own web site. So I guess now, my only option is to sell my white mac book and go with a refurb or b stock mac book pro with the texas instruments firewire chip. I noticed on all the mac book and I mac product pages that one comesacross, it just says firewire 400 or 800, for example. It would make thingsa heck of a lot easier for audio/video people if they would list the specific firewire chip on the product page. Even one of the people I spoke with at Apple said that they didn't know the choice of chip caused issues. He thought that firewire is firewire, which is what I thought, until recently. What a headache this turned out to be. Thanks, Cameron. -----Original Message-----From: ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] OnBehalf Of Mike C Sent: Sunday, November 23, 2008 8:59 AM To: ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Issue with my mac book and Tascam FW1884. then the next question would be what chip set firewire port are you using?----- Original Message ----- From: "Cameron" <cameron@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, November 22, 2008 1:22 PM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Issue with my mac book and Tascam FW1884.Hi. It's not only in Sonar... This is happening even when you play back an mp3 file in winamp or windows media player etc. Cameron. -----Original Message----- From: ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Phil Muir Sent: Saturday, November 22, 2008 8:49 AM To: ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Issue with my mac book and Tascam FW1884. Hmm, depends. I personally have generally found using WDM drivers, especially on core duo systems better with the FW1884. If your going to use WDM then, set the slider in the FW1884 control panel to 16%. Then, put the slider in Sonar as low as possible and profile the card. Well, I thought I had revived my desktop but after two days of installing and configuring everything, my system drive is shot. So, I'm left with my mac book now. I am having an issue with the FW1884with it though.I have the latest firmware installed, as well as the latest drivers, and latest Sonar plug in. Here are the mac book specs. 2.4gHz Intel core 2duo processor, 2 gigs of ram, 160gig hd. I have a partition setup so half is OSX Lepard and the other half is Windows xp pro service pac 3. I've installed Sonar producer 7.2 and the latest version of jSonar for Sonar seven. Anyways, whether audio is currently playing back or not, I am getting little noises through my monitors every twenty seconds or so. And then the audio totally stops. About six or seven seconds later, the audio continues where it left off. While the audio is playing, there are no cracks, pops, skips, etc. When the drop out happens, it's immediate and the same goes for whenthe audio playback resumes. This happens even when only listening to anmp3 or video using winamp for example. It's not like I'm pushing the machineorthe tascam hard or anything. I've disabled the firewire network adaptorand that has made no difference. There are also no other firewire devices hooked up. Just the FW1884. The internal sound card on the mac book has no issues. I am hoping that putting a new system drive in my desktop will allow me togo back to that for my music work but it's not something I can take careof soon so the mac book is my only midi/audio option at the moment. Any tips on what I could do to solve this? Thanks, Cameron. PLEASE READ THIS FOOTER AT LEAST ONCE!
