Hi Herman,

It's not a stupid question but I think the language needs a little clarifying. Systems with subs can be just as professional as any other system. You can buy surround systems with Active monitors that have a sub to organise the signal flow for spacialisation as well as providing the very low frequencies that standard monitors can't reach. These are the kind of systems that hollywood sound designers use for high budget films.

The name "Multimedia system" usually refers to those cheap bits of tat that you can pick up in PC world for under £200. There was a big fuss over a system called "Blue Sky" and everything you read said they were excellent and only cost £400. But having heard them I can tell you that the only thing I'd mix on them would be a sponge cake.

The real reason for having a system with a sub and sats is that you need to mix on a surround system, or one which hits frequencies below 50Hz on a regular basis. This is very rare in most commercial music. For the average studio system you should be fine with a decent stereo pair.

The one reason not to go with a 2.1 system is that the bass frequencies will be coming from a different location than the rest of the mix. Some people say that low frequencies are non-directional but this really isn't the case.

Whatever you decide to get, you should make sure that they're active speakers and try to spend as much on them as you can since they're the most important part of the entire studio. Obviously listen to them first and try to compare them with other models in the store.

Hope this helps,

Dan

Stupid question for you all. But I need a good definition or a reason why you would rather mix on professional monitors verses mixing on a set of Multimedia speakers with a subwoofer?
