A classic use of a vocoder was Laurie Anderson's "Superman" track - late 70s or early 80s). Best wishes. Ever hear those funky robot voices in music, mostly from the 70s? That was probably a vocoder. Although vocoders often get confused with talkboxes, which is I suspect what the pentagon is trying to emulate. Basically though, in the case of the pentagon, you're combining the waveform of your voice or whatever audio signal with the waveform of the pentagon's synth. Essentially what you get in the end is a sort of talking synthesizer. PLEASE READ THIS FOOTER AT LEAST ONCE!
